Well, our lead story last week (“Fight for radio station”, Bolander, March 31) has certainly elicited strong comments by our readers and the community, with some people pulling no punches.

But this is what community journalism (and the Fourth Estate in general) is meant to do – open up the channels of communication, stimulate thought and conversation, encourage paradigm shifts and serve as a conduit.

It’s clear that the current situation at Radio Helderberg is going to take some time to resolve, and we shall be paying close attention to matters as they unfold. There are a couple of clarifications that need to be made, however.

Bolander journalist Norman McFarlane, who penned the story, has been a regular guest on Ann Coetzee’s “Good food and wine” slot on her Monday morning show – as our readers are well aware, one of his many passions is cooking, hence his weekly Man in the Kitchen column in Bolander.

Additionally, the charges levelled against Radio Helderberg station manager Tracey Lange, in the notice of suspension served on her, were the following: failure to resolve the conflict of her continued employment at Good Hope FM; disregard for and undermining of authority; failure to raise invoices in due time; failure to take instruction from the board of directors; nepotism, and the suggestion that there had been a breakdown of trust between station management and the board of directors.

The list of charges was left out of the original story which may have helped to clarify the issue for readers.

An enquiry into these matters will reveal the accuracy or inaccuracy of these allegations, and whether those involved acted within or outside the limits of their jurisdictions.

There are many complexities, and while we understand that there are some who are hot under the collar about what has transpired, personal attacks are not warranted , which is why the letters are edited accordingly.
