The weather didn’t deter all the cycling enthusiasts who descended for the annual race at Boschendal estate, and harvest festivals continue in celebration of the vine. Marketplaces were filled with shoppers carrying baskets of locally-grown produce, art and craft markets displayed the creative talents of those in our midst, and the beaches were full as visitors flocked to the ocean for some respite.
A sod-turning ceremony on Friday heralded the construction of Stellenbosch University’s football centre at Lentelus, which will serve as a base for the University’s Youth Sports Initiative – a project that will create a legacy for the lives of disadvantaged youth in the greater Stellenbosch area, aimed at developing young talent through football, particularly girls and children with disabilities.
And the Starlight Classics filled the night skies above Vergelegen Estate with the gorgeous sounds of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, Freshlyground and many others, and a mesmerising performance by the Zip Zap Circus.
It is also an eagerly anticipated week among students and parents in the town of oaks, as the March graduation ceremony of Stellenbosch University is being held this week (Monday, Tuesday and today), with more than 2 000 degrees awarded in the various faculties – a proud moment for many families, and congratulations to everyone on their hard work and diligence.
